M-09 Highway: widening has been completed on half of the 34-km section, with a new road base and asphalt pavement in place!
The capital repairs of the international highway section between Lviv and the Rava-Ruska–Hrebenne border crossing has been underway for only six months, yet the company has already completed the bulk of the works.
✅ 5 bridges are at the final stage, with monolithic bridge deck slabs already cast.
✅ 17 km of the highway have been widened, with the road base and asphalt pavement completed (temporary yellow markings divide the road into two equal parts, but in reality the new road already has three traffic lanes).
✅ 9 culverts have been installed (with two more currently under construction), as well as 4 wildlife crossings measuring 1.5 × 2.0 m (to accommodate these crossings, the road level was raised by 2 m).
Favourable weather conditions are currently allowing the project to continue without interruption.
Widening works on the second half of the highway are ongoing.
As a reminder, Automagistral-Pivden commenced the major rehabilitation of the of the M-09 highway on the section between Lviv and the “Rava-Ruska – Hrebenne” border crossing.
This is the main route from Kyiv to Warsaw and part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The length of our section under repair (from the village of Volia-Vysotska to the border crossing) is 33.4 km.
Before the war, the EBRD carried out a road safety audit, an economic feasibility study, and environmental and social assessments. In 2020, Ukraine and the Bank signed a financing agreement covering a number of projects, including the overhaul of the M-09.
During the war, the project became even more critical – traffic volume increased, and the road’s condition worsened.
Project scope includes:
✅ Widening the road outside settlements, adding an extra lane.
✅ Adding acceleration and deceleration lanes on both sides near bus stops, intersections, and junctions.
✅ Completely replacing the road base and installing a new three-layer asphalt pavement.
✅ Dismantling and rebuilding six bridges, most of which are in emergency condition; four bridges will be replaced with concrete culverts, and a roundabout will be constructed.
✅ Installing a stormwater drainage (and purification) system, as one does not currently exist.
✅ Building sidewalks, bike lanes, and noise barriers
