M-09 Highway: Monolithic Deck Slabs Installed on 5 Bridges!

The Capital repairs of the international M-09 highway section between Lviv and the “Rava-Ruska – Hrebenne” border crossing includes the reconstruction of six deteriorated bridges.
On five of the bridges, most of the work has already been completed: old structures have been dismantled, new bridge supports installed, and the superstructure beams placed.
This week, the installation of monolithic bridge deck slabs was completed.
Early winter has been relatively mild, with temperatures above zero, but all works were carried out in compliance with the requirements for concreting during the winter period:
❄️ A “winter -grade” ” concrete mix with special additives was used, delivered from Automagistral-Pivden’s own concrete plant in the Lviv region.
❄️ The concrete mix temperature was maintained at no less than 20°C.
❄️ The slab was heated from below to ensure a constant temperature of at least 10°C.
❄️ After concreting, the concrete was insulated with two layers of film and a layer of mineral insulation.
As a reminder, Automagistral-Pivden commenced the major rehabilitation of the of the M-09 highway on the section between Lviv and the “Rava-Ruska – Hrebenne” border crossing.
This is the main route from Kyiv to Warsaw and part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The length of our section under repair (from the village of Volia-Vysotska to the border crossing) is 33.4 km.
Before the war, the EBRD carried out a road safety audit, an economic feasibility study, and environmental and social assessments. In 2020, Ukraine and the Bank signed a financing agreement covering a number of projects, including the overhaul of the M-09.
During the war, the project became even more critical – traffic volume increased, and the road’s condition worsened.
Project scope includes:
✅ Widening the road outside settlements, adding an extra lane.
✅ Adding acceleration and deceleration lanes on both sides near bus stops, intersections, and junctions.
✅ Completely replacing the road base and installing a new three-layer asphalt pavement.
✅ Dismantling and rebuilding six bridges, most of which are in emergency condition; four bridges will be replaced with concrete culverts, and a roundabout will be constructed.
✅ Installing a stormwater drainage (and purification) system, as one does not currently exist.
✅ Building sidewalks, bike lanes, and noise barriers
