M-09 Highway: Working 24/7

Works at the site are now being carried out in two shifts!

At night, we mostly lay the base course made of C7 crushed stone-sand mixture stabilized with M20 cement, along with the binder layer of coarse-grained asphalt concrete (10 cm). During the day — the wearing course made of SMA-15 (5 cm).

The objective is to complete asphalt paving works across all sections by the end of the year.

As a reminder, the M-09 highway is the main route from Kyiv to Warsaw, forming part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The length of the section under repair (from the village of Volia-Vysotska to the border crossing point) is 33.4 km.

Even before the war, the EBRD conducted a road safety audit, an economic feasibility analysis, as well as an environmental and social assessment. In 2020, a financing agreement was signed between Ukraine and the bank for a number of projects, including the major repair of the M-09.

During the war, the project became even more critical: traffic load increased while the road surface condition degraded.

The M-09 major repair project, implemented by our company, involves the reconstruction of 33.4 km of road (from the village of Volia-Vysotska to the border crossing point). We are executing the works in stages to avoid obstructing traffic.

What the project entails:

Outside built-up areas, the road is being widened — an additional traffic lane is being added;

Acceleration and deceleration lanes are being installed on both sides near bus stops, intersections, and junctions;

The road base is being completely replaced, and a new surface consisting of three asphalt concrete layers is being laid;

6 bridges are being reconstructed (most of them structurally deficient), 4 bridges are being replaced with concrete box culverts, and a roundabout is being constructed;

A drainage system for the roadway is being created;

Sidewalks, cycle paths, and noise barriers are being installed.
